The responsibility for protecting the rights and
welfare of human subjects participating in research is shared by
the Institutional Review Board (IRB), the principal investigator
(researcher), data lending agencies, and the organization with which
the researcher is affiliated. While the IRB serves as a regulatory
committee, its functions include facilitating cooperation, on-going
discussion, and feedback among all responsible parties. The IRB
process enables researchers to produce results that can potentially
benefit society while ensuring that the risk of harm to human research
participants is minimized.
