Pennsylvania’s Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Committee established the Female Services Subcommittee in late 2000. The Subcommittee was charged with developing an action plan and recommendations for improving the juvenile justice system’s ability to effectively respond to girls and young women. The Subcommittee is comprised of practitioners from an array of organizations and researchers and policymakers.
Since it’s inception, the Subcommittee has taken specific steps to educate itself by gathering statistics, reviewing research reports and program descriptions and learning about the target population. The Subcommittee surveyed the Chief Juvenile Probation Officers in Pennsylvania to gather information about Pennsylvania-specific programs and interventions for girls. It has also overseen the creation of a number of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Coordinator positions and encouraged the evaluation of the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Project.
In addition, the Female Services Subcommittee has undertaken a dynamic and thorough planning process. The Subcommittee’s Strategic Plan articulates the vision, mission, goals, and objectives that are the result of the planning efforts. While the plan may be ambitious, the end product will be a gender-responsive Pennsylvania juvenile justice system. We dedicate our journey to the girls and young women that we serve.
